Mac Users - Start Here




WIndows 10 Pro is Different From Windows 10 Education Version  DO NOT USE WINDOWS 10 EDUCATION
  • Please contact Lisa Preble, lpreble@uci.edu for WIndows 7 or Windows 10 Pro
    • Through our MS Azure for Teaching subscription, the WIndows 10 EDU is available, but not Pro. 
    • The EDU version has issues with Bootcamp.
  • Download the software.
    • Sometimes the download fails with Safari so use Mozilla Firefox or Chrome.

Install Windows on your Mac using Bootcamp.

  1. Visit the Apple's Bootcamp website for the latest information and instructional guides.
    1. For older Macs view the Legacy Installation Guides
  2. Backup any important files to an external drive or the cloud in case something bad happens during the installation process.
  3. For best results, update the software on your Mac using these instructions.
  4. Follow the instructions from Apple to create an ISO image for Bootcamp.
    1. This will be the Windows installation media
    2. Also check out these instructions USB/Windows DVD Bootcamp disk.
  5. Then visit How to Bootcamp to Windows 7 to configure your Apple Computer to run the Windows 7 Operating System downloaded from Imagine. It is the same process for Windows 10.
  6. Also review Apple's instructions for Using Windows 10 with BootCamp.

Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi

  • Consider installing BootCamp via Ethernet instead of Wi-fi
  • The process will take about 1.5-2 hours over WiFi.
  • Using Ethernet, it'll take around 5-10 minutes

Install system and security updates on Windows.

  • After installing Windows on your Apple Computer, ensure your Windows OS is up-to-date by visiting Windows Update.

UCI requires you to install anti-virus software.


    Here is a list of free for personal use protection programs is included below. 

    Keep in mind that there are many subscription based anti-virus/spyware programs which may better suit your needs.


Install fan control software to help with over-heating.

  • Many Apple users complain of their laptops overheating while running Windows
  • To solve this issue, it is recommended to install Mac Fan Control.

Use these instructions to activate Windows using the Product Key from Imagine.

  • The product key is displayed on the receipt of your Windows product order.

Install the latest Microsoft .Net Framework.
