Utilities Needed To Create a Ubuntu VM
What you need:
1 - VMWare - Download here: https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/6_0
2 - Ubuntu - Download here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
Creating and Setting up a Virtual Machine with Ubuntu
STEP 1: Run VMWare as an Administrator (right click on VMWare, run as administrator)
STEP 2: Select "Create a new virtual machine."
STEP 3: The follow window will pop up. Select "I will install the operating system later."
STEP 4: On the next screen, make sure you select "Linux" and then proceed to select 64-bit as the version. If your computer is unable to run 64-bit, then select just normal "Ubuntu" under the version list.
STEP 5: Name your machine whatever you want it to be named, and leave the installation location unchanged. After proceeding to the next screen, also leave the Maximum Disk space as the default 20 GB, and make sure that "Store Virtual Disk as a Single File" is selected.
STEP 6: Press Finish. You should then be taken back to the VMWare homescreen, with your new virtual machine created. Click "Edit Virtual Machine Settings".
STEP 7: Drag the memory slider to 2GB, and then click on CD/DVD (IDE)
STEP 8: Once you are on the CD/DVD option, select "Use ISO Image File", and locate the Ubuntu OS file that you downloaded earlier. Your downloads are typically on your desktop or in the "Downloads" folder.
STEP 9:
Press OK, then when you're on the homescreen, press "Play Virtual Machine". Ubuntu will now run on the virtual machine.
STEP 10: Let Ubuntu do its thing, and you should get to this "Install" prompt. Press Install Ubuntu.
STEP 11: You will be at the "Preparing to Install Ubuntu" page now. Make sure that your computer has the specified requirements, and then UNCHECK the boxes that say "Download updates while installing" and "Install this third-party software".
STEP 12: Select "Erase disk and install Ubuntu"
STEP 13: Select "Install Now". Leave all the options unchanged.
.
STEP 14: Wait for the installation to complete. During the installation, you can choose to select your time zone, keyboard layout, and login information. After the installation completes, you'll be prompted to restart the computer. Install any updates as required, and you should be on your way.
